Staying Away from Alcohol During Pregnancy

Stay away from all alcohol while you are pregnant. If you find it hard to say no, avoid parties, bars and other situations where people drink alcohol.

If you have a problem stopping, get help. Stop for yourself and for your unborn child.

Make it easier to give up alcohol.

  • Ask your partner, family and friends to support your decision to stay from alcohol.
  • Avoid situations where you usually drink, like parties or bars.
  • Discuss alcohol and other drug use with your health care provider.
  • Join an Alcoholic Anonymous support group. Their telephone number is 707-544-1300.
  • Ask your health care provider for alcohol treatment programs or visit our alcohol recovery resources webpage.

If you drink alcohol, don't have unprotected sex.

  • Be aware that women are more likely to have unprotected sex while they are under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.
  • Plan ahead and use birth control. Emergency contraception gives women a second chance to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.
